There is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe called the Republic of Belarus, more commonly called simply Belarus. With a population of 9.49 million in the country, the majority of the population lives in urban areas. While the majority of the population lives in the cities, about 40% of the country is forested.

The majority of people living in Belarus are natives speaking official languages of Belarusian and Russian. There are also several minority groups in the country, including Russians, Poles and Ukrainians. While there is no official religion, Russian Orthodox Christianity is the predominant religious view.

On August 25, 1991 Belarus declared its independence from Russia. The country currently is led by President Alexander Lukashenko since 1994. The president works with the National Assembly consisting of a 110 member House of Representatives and a 64 member Council of the Republic.
