Kiribati is a small island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. The residents who call the island home add up to only around 100,000, making it smaller than most cities. The island is made up of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, dispersed over 1,351,000 square miles. Until 1979 the country was ruled by the United Kingdom. The country became a full member of the United Nations in 1999.

The Kiribati Constitution was drafted in July 1979 and promotes free and open elections for president. Under the constitution, the president is limited to only three 4-year terms after watch a new president must be elected.

Ethnically, The Kiribati people are Micronesian. The Kiribati speak an Oceanic language called Gilbertese, it is the official language. However, English is also an official language despite it not being used very often outside the island capital city of Tarawa. Kiribati is considered one of the least developed countries in the world. A large portion of the countries income is from tourism.
