The Togolese Republic (previously Togoland) is a West African country bordered by Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso. On its southern border is the Gulf of Guinea, and the capital of Lome is located on that coast. The northern areas of the country are primarily gently rolling savannah, while the center of the country is full of hills. South of that is a plateau that extends to a coastal plain filled with lagoons and marsh.

The official language of the country is French, but many other languages are also spoken, such as Ewe, Mina, and Kabiye. There are approximately forty different ethnic groups making up the population of the country, with the largest group, the Ewe, only making up thirty-two percent of the population. Despite influences from Christianity and Islam, more than half of the people still follow native animistic practices.

Though technically a democratic presidential republic, Togo's democratic process was disrupted by a coup de tat by the military in 2005, and elections since then have been of questionable legitimacy.
